A recently published 3 year study on Art and Design in second level schools in the UK found that boys are not attracted to art and design because the curriculum is excessively focused on the drawn and painting medium and does not emphasize computer design and digital photography nearly enough.
The study of 180 schools found that boys perform better when involved in hands on practical art media and are more motivated when given the chance to use digital cameras and computers with multimedia graphics packages. They find that these form of expression better stretch their imagination.
In general the report was very damning of teachers in general stating..
“..schools have an unimaginative curriculum and are not stimulating..”
And that ..
“Teachers lack subject knowledge, fail to assess work and do not stimulate children's creativity.”
Ofsteds’ Christine Gilbert, the chief inspector, said: "It is encouraging that art, craft and design remains popular overall, but disappointing that fewer boys choose to take exams in art. And even when they do, they continue to achieve considerably less well than girls."
It’s a very unfortunate situation. Animation using computers have vast potential in this area. But many schools have yet to understand it’s potential. We have found in the workshops that we have done that the boys really find the combination of technology and art taps into their imagination like no other form of art and design.
